Auto Avia Design’s engine compartment fire extinguishing system for the Pilatus PC12 consists of a pilot-operated Halon-filled bottle, which discharges at two points in the engine compartment. The first discharge nozzle points at the FCU (Fuel Control Unit), whilst the second discharges at the front of the engine from where it fills the entire engine compartment.
The fire extinguisher system is completely independent of the standard aircraft fire detection system. In the event of an engine fire, the existing aircraft fire detection system alerts the pilot via the CAWS annunciator panel. The pilot then follows the emergency procedures specified in the Flight Manual Supplement. A combination of guarded arm and fire switches prevent accidental discharge of the bottle.
The bottle is contained in the right hand external compartment between the firewall and wing. The bottle is equipped with a contents pressure gauge.
